Are your patterns suitable for beginners?
Yes — I offer patterns across four skill levels: Beginner, Confident Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. Each product page shows the rating so you can choose a project that feels achievable.
What does “Confident Beginner” mean?
Confident Beginner means you’ve sewn a few projects and you’re ready to level up without overwhelm. You might tackle a zipper, pockets, or more shaping, but the instructions are still very guided.
What’s included in a PDF pattern?
Each PDF pattern includes step-by-step instructions and pattern pieces (or measurement charts for “Measure and Cut” styles). Many patterns also include diagrams, cutting layouts, and helpful tips for tricky steps.
Do your patterns include seam allowance?
All patterns include seam allowance, and I tell you the exact amount in the instructions. Always check the first pages before cutting so everything fits correctly.
How do I print the pattern at the correct size?
Print the test square first and make sure it measures accurately before printing the full pattern. Set your printer to “Actual Size” or “100%” and avoid “Fit to Page.”
Where do I find my downloads?
Your downloads are available in your account after purchase. If you can’t access them, contact me and I’ll help you get sorted.
Can I sell bags I make from your patterns?
Yes — you can sell handmade items made from my patterns in small quantities. Mass production and sharing or reselling the PDF files is not allowed.
Can I share the PDF with a friend?
No — PDF patterns are for personal use and can’t be shared or redistributed. If a friend would like the pattern, they’ll need to purchase their own copy.
What fabric works best for bag making?
Stable, durable fabrics work best for bags, like canvas, denim, cotton with interfacing, home décor fabric, vinyl, cork and leather. The best choice depends on how structured you want the finished bag to be.
What interfacing should I use?
Use interfacing based on your fabric weight and the structure you want in the final bag. Each pattern recommends what works best, and you can go softer or firmer depending on your preference.
I’m nervous about zippers — can I still make your patterns?
Yes — you can sew zippers, and I break them into manageable steps in the instructions. Go slowly, baste if needed, and you’ll be surprised how quickly your confidence grows.
Do your patterns work on industrial machines too?
My patterns are written to be domestic-machine friendly, and many makers also sew them successfully on industrial machines. The construction steps are the same — you’ll simply use settings and needles that suit your machine.
Who is ChrisW Designs for?
ChrisW Designs is for confident beginners and early-intermediate sewists right through to advanced sewists, who want beautifully functional bags with clear, supportive instructions. If you like learning step-by-step and ending up with a bag you’ll actually use, you’re in the right place.
What do you make here?
ChrisW Designs creates PDF sewing patterns for bags, wallets, pocket supplements and zipper overlays. Each pattern is designed to be practical, polished, and beginner-friendly without feeling “basic.”
Why are your patterns different?
My patterns are written for home sewing machines, and they also work beautifully on industrial machines. Use whichever machine you love — the construction steps stay the same.
How do your PDF patterns work?
You purchase, download, and print (or use a projector, if supported), then follow the step-by-step instructions to sew your bag. Most patterns include pattern templates, clear step by step photos, and tips to help you stay on track. Video support is available for most patterns, too.
Difficulty ratings
How do I choose the right difficulty rating?
Start with the rating that matches your current comfort level, not what you wish you could sew today. Each pattern is rated Beginner, Confident Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced so you can pick a project that feels achievable and enjoyable.
- Beginner: Great if you’re new to bag-making or want a stress-free sew. Expect simple construction and minimal hardware.

- Confident Beginner: Perfect if you’ve made a few projects and want to level up. Expect clearer shaping, pockets, or a zipper—still very guided.

- Intermediate: Best if you’re comfortable reading pattern instructions and handling multiple steps. Expect more layers, structure, and techniques like zips, pockets, and hardware placement.

- Advanced: Designed for experienced bag-makers who enjoy complex builds. Expect many components, precision steps, and more involved construction.

Why should I make a bag instead of buying one?
Making your own bags allows for total customization of pockets, size, and materials while ensuring a level of durability rarely found in mass-produced fast fashion. By DIY-ing, you gain a deep understanding of construction, allowing you to repair or upgrade your gear rather than discarding it.
Plus, there is a certain “main character energy” that comes from someone asking, “Where did you get that bag?” and being able to say, “Oh, this? I made it.”
